The Local Drive In Movie Theaters

The Starlite Drive In was located across the street from LaSalle Senior High School on Military Road... oh wait, that isn't there anymore either! Okay, maybe I should say that the Starlite Drive In was located right about where Wegman's now stands. I only slightly remember it... I recall seeing The Empire Strikes Back there when I was about 6 years old. It was a double feature along with a Dom Deluise movie called Fatso... how many of you remember that movie?!

Here are some classic photos and newspaper ads of The Starlite Drive In:

Here are a couple photos of the Falls Auto Vue Drive In located on Witmer Road (across from the softball fields).

I never in my life thought I'd read about someone else on this planet having seen The Empire Strikes Back and Fatso on the same night at the Starlight drive-in theater on Military Rd. back in 1980! I was 7 years old at the time and over the years had nearly come to believe that such an odd pairing of cinematic art had never actually occured and was just the product of jumbled childhood memories. I am now relieved to know that there was another young boy like me sitting in his car that night watching Han Solo shoot lasers at Darth Vader over the dinner table and Dom DeLuise shoveling so much food into his mouth you'd think he was trying to turn himself into a real-life version of Jabba the Hutt.

It was great to see my favorite drive in. I lived nearby on 79th street off Pine Ave and going to Marylyn Monroe in "Niagara" in 1954. At that time there was just woods across the street and the Milk Cup was on the corner of Pine and Military. I was 8 at the time. Later I brought my daughters to the Starlight.
